Atari CEO: “Atarti is Working on a New Console”

Will presumably feature wood-grain siding.

Surprising as it may seem, Atari is making a new console. In a recent interview with GamesBeat, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais confirmed that the company was making a new console. As well as mentioning that said console has been in the works for some time. Enter the Ataribox.

There’s… really no actual info about the Ataribox itself, yet. There’s speculation that it’s going to be a similar deal to Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition; That might be a bad sign, though. Unlike Nintendo, Atari hasn’t had the best… last 2 decades; they certainly haven’t kept the same sort of stranglehold on their intellectual property, either.

You can already find options (soon enough) that will play old Atari games. Even then, many of Atari’s games from their original heyday are over 30 years old; those with internet access and, say, a Raspberry Pi, can draw their own conclusions. I doubt that is exactly the most likely possibility for the Ataribox.

Fred Chesnais has, however, turned the company around and made it profitable again. My guess is that the Ataribox will be retro flavored, yet transformative, in the same vein as some of their recent mobile games. Hopefully, they’ll give the thing a decent controller; we know how that song and dance’ll play out if they don’t.
