Breaking: Jon Stewart to leave The Daily Show sometime this year

Not a lot to say to this other than “holy shit.” An era of television is coming to a definitive close: Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show.

According to The AV Club, at today’s taping Stewart told the audience that he’ll be vacating the Daily Show desk sometime this year, although he didn’t offer any more information.

Stewart has hosted since 1999, when he took over for Craig Kilborn, and during his tenure he not only helped launch the careers of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Ed Helms, John Oliver, Kristen Schaal, Wyatt Cenac, Larry Wilmore, and Rob Corddry, but the show also racked up an amazing ten consecutive Emmy wins for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series (from 2003-12).

We’ll have more on this as it develops.
