That’s… actually a smart decision on EA’s part.
Byron Beede Spent nearly 20 years working at Activision Blizzard, most recently as the executive vice president and general manager for Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. And now, EA has appointed him as Senior Vice President and general manager of the Battlefield series. He’ll report to Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella. EA stated that Beede’s hiring “signals a strategic, long-term commitment to the growth of the franchise”.
This is a pretty bold and wise move on EA’s part. While both Battlefield and Call of Duty essentially started at the same time (Battlefield 1942 in 2002, Call of Duty in 2003), there eventually grew a divide in sales between them, with CoD on top. By hiring on one of the top people from their rival, they may just close that gap.
April saw a blog post by DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson stating that Battlefield 6 “the biggest Battlefield development team ever working on our console and PC game for this Holiday season”. They’re actually pulling in talent from Criterion, DICE LA, and EA Gothenburg for the game. Moreover, he revealed that the studio has been working on a mobile Battlefield game with Industrial Toys.It certainly seems like they’re gearing up to take a chunk out of their rival.
