Commodore is back as a smartphone

There are few brands that bring up a wave of nostalgia like Commodore. The computer company was a staple of many of our youths before the rise of the personal computer and Windows platform. Odds are if you were in school during the ’80s and ’90s you got some time behind a Commodore 64 in the computer lab.

Commodore hasn’t been completely gone from memory since the company ceased producing its Commodore 64 computer. The name has popped up over the years making a return as a gaming PC squeezed into a keyword, much like its original counterpart. The company also saw the release of one of those TV Plug and Play consoles that featured some classic games from the system.

But now it looks like Commodore is back once again, and this time as a 5.5 inch Android smartphone. Called the Commodore PET (after their vintage computer of the same name) the smartphone features some pretty decent specs. It sports a 1.7GHz octa-core Mediatek processor and is paired with a 13-megapixel rear facing camera. The camera itself is pretty neat as it offers a shutter button to make taking pictures a more fun experience.

It’s a solid smartphone with the included specs, but what makes the Commodore PET special is that every unit comes with a pair of customized emulators! This means that you be able to enjoy some classic Commodore 64 games on one emulator and Amiga games via the other. But don’t expect to get your hands on the Commodore PET anything soon in the United States.

Current plans will see the smartphone release in Italy, France, Poland and Germany later this month. For those of you in said countries you’ll be able to score yourself a Commodore PET for $300. It’s a pretty affordable price for the smartphone. The manufacturers have already stated that they are hard at work getting the Commodore PET released worldwide in the near future.
