Democrats (+1 Republican) Force Vote to Save Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality

Life of Pai: Part 2: Internet Boogaloo.

On Wednesday, Democrats filed a petition to force a vote on saving net neutrality. While only a single republican is currently supporting the petition, all that’s needed is a single vote to move the resolution along and eventually reinstate net neutrality. The leader of the effort, Sen. Edward Markey, had this to say:

The American people know that the internet is for everyone and was invented with the guiding principle of nondiscrimination.

According to people close to the issue, the senate is possibly to vote on it next week, though negotiations are still ongoing. Markey’s petition gathered 49 signatures, though only 30 were needed for it to go through. Since only a majority is necessary for the resolution to pass, that means they only need a majority to agree, in this case 51 senators, if all are present.

Naturally, net neutrality advocates are putting pressure on several prominent Republican senators, including Sen. Orrin Hatch, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and Sen. Robert Portman.  And almost every major site on the net, including Reddit, Tumblr, Etsy, Tinder, and Pornhub, are on high alert. Yes, you read that right, Pornhub.
