“Digital” Pill Makes Sure You Take Your Medicine

"Digital" Pill

Old people need no longer fear the robot menace.

A “digital” pill has just been approved by the FDA. The pill comes with an embedded sensor that allows doctors to check in on whether their patients have been taking their medication.

In this case, the version of the pill used is Abilify, a medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. The sensor, made by Proteus Digital Health, starts transmitting when it gets wet with stomach acid. The data is initially sent to a wearable patch. Then, it’s sent to a smartphone app, which allows the patient to keep track of their medication schedule. The data can be shared with their doctor, as well as up to four other people. So, you can imagine how useful such a pill could be.
