E3: Square Enix Presents 2021

Square Enix

I probably could’ve just slept through this.

Guardians of the Galaxy

They started off with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from Eidos. Set to be released October 26, 2021. If nothing else, they got the soundtrack right (I hear with my little ear Hot Chocolate’s Every 1’s a Winner), meaning you won’t be able to stream it on Twitch without getting sodomized to death by DMCA. Might be okay, but the specter of Avengers looms large…

Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters

Maybe this time they’ll get it right without, you know, them being ugly as sin.

Legend of Mana

10 seconds of animated trailer for game I actually like. Yay. Literally releases in a week and a half, they could’ve given me more.

Shit this is a good opening animation, if you ignore the fact that almost none of it features the artstyle used in the game’s illustrations (which would admittedly be way harder to animate). If they’d played this in full during the presentation, I wouldn’t have felt so cheated. I still would’ve felt cheated, but less so.

Marvel’s Avengers

Teasing Black Panther expansion, C-list villains, still not a game anyone really likes. Why was this a headliner?

Oh, also, hi Christopher Judge. It’s nice to hear you again. A shame it’s in this game.

Mobile:

Literally all mobile stuff. Literally all tiny trailers that are gone in a flash. Practically no information. Meh.

Babylon’s Fall

Here we go. Platinum partnership is paying off… live-service title. I’m beginning to get really sick of live service games, because it’s the new name for Free to Play: meant to be “engaging” for as long as possible in the hopes that you blow money on microtransactions. It’s the Mobile gacha model minus the gacha. Would otherwise look like a decent game. Might still be. We’ll see.

Life is Strange: True Colors

Haha I don’t care. Empathy is a terrible YA novel superpower. Bet you anything it suddenly stops working when a “bad” (i.e. based on someone the author doesn’t like) person shows up? Also remasters of the first two games.

Imagine this in eye searing 12K:

lol.

Stranger of Paradise

Team Ninja Tetsuya Nomura game. A “bold new” vision of Final Fantasy, that is exactly like every other Tetsuya Nomura/Kazushige Nojima Final Fantasy project. Probably an okay to decent game with a story that will make me want to strangle myself with my own innards. Rehashing Garland/Chaos dichotomy from Dissidia.

How this is probably going to make me feel when I see everybody praising it to high heavens online.

Forespoken

Final Fantasy XVI

Both of these were literally snippets of material tacked on to the end of the presentation. Meh.

… and that was it. No news on Triangle Strategy. Nothing on Dragon Quest III 2D HD Remake. Practically nothing for my my old-RPG-loving ass. Ubisoft had a bad presentation, and SE said “hold my beer”. You get bonus points for offering a DMCA friendly version of the presentation, though.

At least they didn’t announce a Balan Wonderworld sequel. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
