EA Has Game Changer Remove Video, Reupload Without Watermarks

EA

A puzzling adventure.

For those that don’t know, EA has a community partnership program called Game Changers. In essence, it’s a program that supports it’s members in making the content they would anyway (it’s really unclear what it officially does; supposedly sponsorship, but publically…?). And part of that is allowing them to express their genuine opinion on the games they play or are sent by EA.

YouTube user Gggmanlives is a part of that program. And he got sent Anthem. Long story short: he didn’t think the game was too hot. EA encourages Game Changers to give their honest opinion, though, so what could the issue be?

Well, shortly after upload, EA requested that he take down the review, citing the Game Changers watermarks as the problem. Said watermarks show someone is a member of the program. And, according to Gggmanlives, he was told to take the video down and remover the watermarks, or he’d be “in breach of contract or something along those lines.”

Here’s where things get complicated. He was allowed to reupload without the watermarks.

Why? Well, in a statement to VG 24/7, EA’s representative said:

Our Game Changers program is not designed to pay for review content. We don’t believe in that. In this case, the conditions for disclosure for this specific video were not met – which is something we adhere very strictly to – so we asked for it to be taken down and corrected. We’ve not asked for the content of the video to be changed, or ‘blacklisted’ the creator. Our full disclosure rules can be found here.

So here’s the thing; on the one hand, you have EA saying they never pay for such content. on the other hand, you have people in the program saying that sometimes they will. And while EA says that it was a sort of matter to do with disclosure, that doesn’t make much sense. If that were true, why would he be allowed to reupload the video, watermark or no. I would love, love, to know exactly what the deal is in this case. Because, right now, it just makes no real sense.
