EA Play 2017 Roundup

EA Play

E3 started early

EA got their press conference out of the way a full 3 days before E3 begins proper. that’s some dedication. To be honest, I’m not a huge EA guy, so I’ll get the obvious out of the way, and dig into EA Play.

Once again, they got a bunch of sports guys dressed up in spandex and taped ping pong balls to them. They’ve made the models better than last year. LeBron James’ face is now 97.8% to being a 1:1 perfect replica of his actual face. All I know about soccer is that it seems to bring out the worst in everyone.

Since we’re going in order of impressiveness, Bioware has a new IP. That’s it. They showed us 3 femtoseconds of a teaser, we won’t know more until the Microsoft press conference. All we really have is a name: Anthem.

Need for Speed Payback is shaping up to be more and more like a playable Fast and the Furious. Literally; they showed off the heist of a moving truck in their presentation. You can also salvage old car parts and Frankenstein your car out of them. Less of a focus on winning races, as well.

A Way Out is a prison escape game made by the makers of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It’s geared for couch co-op, which is nice if you still have friends. There is still an online mode but you miss out on that real world meta. Legit interesting.

Battlefield 1 is getting a whole heap of loving. They also prattled on for a bit about how great the community is, which even I can’t muster the ability to feign interest about. The DLC coming, however, is the sort of thing history buffs will love. Not only are they bringing night maps to the game, they’re opening up the Eastern front. All of the infamous Russian battalions and units will be available in the In the Name of the Tsar expansion. It’s going to be off the hook.

Finally, we come to the crown jewel of EA Play; Star Wars Battlefront 2. They’ve acknowledged the fact that Battlefront was missing: a story campaign. notably, they looped John Boyega into talking about it (his tweet was central to the push for a campaign), but that’s not all. Both Finn and Captain Phasma will be free DLC, with more to come. What’s more, the game itself is shaping up to be better than its predecessor. The better your performance, the more options you have: heroes and villains, special units, even vehicles are earned with points earned in battle. The aerial dogfighting looks damn good, too. They showcased an entire match; The fighting was spectacular, the game was fluid, it looked good. They get props for admitting where they botched things last time, too.
