Europa is Tencent’s PUBG Competition

Europa

What’s with all this battle royale, could we just get a battle double cheeseburger instead?

Tencent has decided that if they can’t join ’em, they’ll beat ’em. They’ve been trying to acquire Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds developer Bluehole for a while. But now, they’ve decided they’re going to make their own battle royale. With blackjack, and hookers. Called Europa.

In fact, forget the battle royale.

Europa’s pretty obviously their take on the genre, despite the fact that they haven’t just out and said so. There’s a few differences; the setting is more tropical, and the weapons are more professional than the slightly improvised ones from PUBG.

That said, it does bring its own things to the table: destructible environments, and dynamic weather conditions. You can see the former in action in the trailer; a wall gets shattered by vehicle impact, and a bunch of steel pipes are shot down onto another player.

Europa isn’t out until next year. And probably won’t leave China. But it might do something to shake up the genre anyway.
