FCC Approves First Wireless Distant Charging Station

Wireless charging has become more of a thing in the last decade. And yet, it still has one failing. You can’t pick up and use a device without keeping it from charging.

That’s where Energous’ WattUp Mid Field Transmitter comes in. The San Jose startup has the first FCC approved wireless transmitter capable of charging devices at a distance of up to 3 feet. The transmitter converts energy into radiowaves, which can be converted back into energy by any device with a proper receiver.

WattUp can charge multiple devices at once, too. And it can be any device, so long as it has a compatible receiver. And the manufacturer doesn’t enter into the picture; WattUp can recharge devices made by Samsung, Sony, Apple, etc. As long as they have a compatible receiver, they’ll charge.

The devices aren’t on the market just yet, though. But Energous does plan to show them off at this year’s CES in Las Vegas (June 9-12).
