FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Trailer Hits, Drops Its Turn-Based Core

FINAL FANTASY VII Remake

The Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer looks fantastic, but did you really expect otherwise? The biggest thing to note is that the gameplay has had a major overhaul and now mirrors the Kingdom Hearts style. While I can’t say this is a bad thing –Kingdom Hearts was solid– it does give my cause for concern.

Personally, this isn’t the remake that I wanted, and it paints the picture that younger gamers today don’t have the ability to enjoy the slower turn-based RPG experience that made this series what it is today (a hallway simulator?). Sure, this could just be me being old and cranky, and while I have a lot of issues with Final Fantasy VII as a game, I don’t understand why change things that weren’t broken, or that nobody complained about.

My general rule with remakes is that if they were great games already, just leave them be. If you want to re-release them, that’s fine, but other than slapping them on a new engine to look pretty, messing with the core mechanics is a cardinal sin in my book. I play Final Fantasy VII to play Final Fantasy VII, not to play Kingdom Hearts 2.9999 (3?).
