The Flash “The New Rogues”

The Flash - The New Rogues-0

The Flash decided to take a detour from the Dr. Alchemy storyline it has going right now. Which is fine, honestly. Especially when it drops a little bit of Silver Age flavoring into things, like this one did.

Barry’s giving Jessie whatever training he can before she and Harry head back to Earth-2. Personally, it strikes me as her not getting much training at all, but it may just be the sort of thing that they didn’t even bother with a montage for. But they’re definitely returning home at some point, soon.

Cisco and Caitlin mention how they’re going to miss Harry, since he’s essentially part of the team. Harry suggests that, since there is a multiverse of Wells’s out there, they could just recruit one. He sets up a mathematical formula meant as a test, and with Cisco’s help, sends it into the multiverse. That way, any sufficiently advanced Earth would be able to respond through their own Wells.

The responses were mostly an excuse for Tom Cavanagh to rummage through the properties department. But they were right to reject the mime!Wells.

Harry’s mostly unimpressed with the applicants. Especially hipster!Wells; even though Cisco and Caitlin think he’s the best they’ll get, Harry goes with his gut. It’s how he’s hired all of his employees up until this point, and it’s served him well. He eventually relents, though, since they start to think he doesn’t actually want to be replaced. Judging from the scenes for next week, though, I’m guessing Harry’s gut was right.

The Flash - The New Rogues-2
They should’ve gone with the mime. God help me.

Barry is still uncomfortable being lovey dovey with Iris while Joe’s around. To be fair, Joe’s clearly uncomfortable with it as well, but Iris is sick of getting blocked by her Dad of all people. By the end of the episode, they’ve mostly got it ironed out, with Barry deciding it might be time to move out. Probably good, since Joe’s D.A. friend has racked up quite the stack of I.O.U.’s from him. And it’s about time he start dating again, I’m sure.

The body of the episode concerns Sam Scudder and Rosa Dillon. They used to work for Leonard Snart, but they hated his rules. This led to them fighting Snart and his old crew right when the accelerator explosion happened. Scudder wound up trapped in a mirror for three years, only finally escaping once the mirror was righted by cleanup workers moving into the warehouse. Dillon, on the other hand, wound up with the ability to inflict severe vertigo on anyone withing line of sight. Scudder wants revenge on Snart for nearly killing him, and goes hunting down the old gang. He springs Dillon from Iron Heights with little trouble thanks to his power, since any relatively reflective surface counts as a mirror. Cisco and Wells dub them Mirror Master and the Top.

Once Top informs him of the fact that Snart has completely disappeared, he decides they can take the town themselves. Needless to say, Top knows better, and tells him about The Flash. Undeterred, they rob a bank. Barry and Jessie show up to stop them. Jessie’s told to stay back, since she’s not really ready yet. But she doesn’t, and she gets whammied by Top. Barry saves her, but Mirror Master takes advantage of that, trapping Barry in a mirror.

Cisco and Harry realize that the only way to get Barry out would be to supercool the mirror to absolute zero temperatures. Their attempt isn’t really all that successful, but it gets interrupted by another attack from Mirror Master and the Top. That said, Caitlin slyly uses her powers to get the mirror the rest of the way, which lets Barry get free.

The Flash - The New Rogues-3
That said, nothing comes for free. It accelerated her transformation.

Round two is practically a curbstomping for Mirror Master and Top. Jessie doesn’t screw around long enough to let Top nab her again, quickly subduing her. Barry on the other hand, set up an elaborate trap with a Hologram of Snart to lure him in. He catches him with, of all things, that endless mirror effect (specifically name dropped as the Droste effect).

The Flash is setting up it’s side drama for the season, most obviously with Caitlin. She’s terrified of becoming like her Earth-2 counterpart, now more than ever. And clearly their new Wells is going to cause some problem necessitating the return of Harry.

Final Thoughts:

  • Wells snuck in the Mirror Master name, thanks to a criminal on Earth-2. Cisco wasn’t happy, naming Top just so that he didn’t get snaked again. Loved it.
  • Cowboy-With-Digestive-Problems Wells would’ve probably been their safest bet, in retrospect.
  • I didn’t even mention the romance plot with Jessie and Wally. It just seems like it’ll be a bigger thing in a later episode.
