The Following review: “Unmasked”

This week on The Following, it’s like the show was celebrating its third season renewal by upping the female body count. Mind you, Fox is the network that jerked around Arrested Development and only gave Freaks and Geeks one season. Here’s a lesson for you comedies, stab more ladies. Duh. On last night’s episode “Unmasked”, we kick things off at a fairly rapid speed, thankfully. Apart from a meet-cute between Mike and Max, that seems like it’s from a different show entirely.

Team Rogue-Vengeance quickly piece together a list of possible FBI moles and unsurprisingly Gina Mendez is at the top. Ryan assumes right away that it must be someone related to Mendez’s personal life, ex-wife/Carroll follower Janna (Leslie Bibb).

After Hardy confronts Gina it seems like she  knows exactly what she has to do, bolting to her ex’s house. Turns out you don’t end up being a suburban housewife without a little psychotic break and trying to ask someone who murdered a dog to confess to being a Carroll follower, turns out to be deadly. Again, duh.

Janna stabs the shit out of Mendez, after admitting to everything and how she was going to dump all this on Mendez anyway, going kind of overboard by kicking her too.  Further evidence to never get married. And as Team Rogue-Vengeance is wont to do, shows up to Janna’s house while she frantically packs her, in case I kill my ex-wife bag. Hardy instantaneously finds Gina’s corpse who mutters out the obvious answer, Janna. Why doesn’t anyone ever shoot these crazies in the kneecaps when they have their annoyingly long monologues? Oh, because they end up shooting themselves in the head dramatically after. That’s right, Janna commits suicide and Gina lives. The Following!

At Korban cult, other than realizing I’ve been misspelling the cult’s names incorrectly, Micah introduces us to cult member/possible serial killer Lance. He’s been chilling in the bunker with other murderers for slicing a chicks ear off, and is very devoted to crazy-ass Micah. Emma’s about to enjoy the longest car ride ever to New York with other Korban member Robert, whom she more or less confirms that she’s a thing with Joe. Homegirl does have some interesting viewpoints on love, “Somebody always ends up dead”. Fun!

Micah’s wife Julie is about to be killed too. After failing Micah’s test and pulling a gun on him in hopes to stop him, Julie gets strangled by Carroll. And Joe’s plan seems to moving along swimmingly, adding to the body count.

In New York, Korban cult’s excursion becomes clear when we find Emma lurking ominously in a wig, at Carrie Cook’s book signing. Pretty soon, an all out  bloodbath breaks out in the bookstore, and just when Carrie Cook looks like she’s done for, Emma hands her a tape to share with the world. Dun, dun, dun. Emma and Robert leave behind creeper Lance, which would be a scary thought, if he didn’t get himself made right away. When Hardy gets on the scene, instantly figures him out, saying they need Lance alive. Lance takes three to the chest. So much for that.

Post-commercial break, Emma’s secret tape to Cook is broadcast on Carrie’s show. It’s Joe Carroll announcing he’s not dead/this his comeback. He’s simultaneously poisoning and killing Micah, not a moment too soon honestly.

Carroll’s trifecta, secret plan is complete. Even getting Robert, Micah’s former right hand man, to get the rest of Korban to “praise Joe”.

And for a cliffhanger, Mike receives a mysterious phone call. He driven with a pillowcase over his head to an unknown location, where we all get to find out, Joe Carroll’s wife actually isn’t dead. Kind of worth it.

I’ll see you again next week for another recap of The Following!
