Former Top Gear trio have a new home & show on Amazon Prime

Top Gear

The boys are back! After Jeremy Clarkson was sacked after an altercation with a BBC staffer during a production of the long running show Top Gear, people speculated on the shows future. Well, we do know that Top Gear is still alive and well over at the BBC, but the new season will be featuring an entirely new set of presenters.

James May and Richard Hammond both stuck by their longtime friend and jumped ship on the hugely popular show. Speculation was rampant about the trio signing with a competing network, but most of the talk was about a new motoring showing being created for one of the many streaming platforms out there. Now we know that Amazon has indeed picked up said show and the trio have signed a contract for a three year deal with the company.

Streaming for the show will begin in the United Kingdom beginning in 2016 with the rest of the world getting the show at a later date as the company figures out a “global TV deal.” With the advent of so many streaming platforms (apparently there was a bidding war for the show between Netflix and Amazon) many shows seem to be using their popularity with fans and their disdain of network television to leverage their positions.

Deals like this would never have been possible even five years ago, but with more options open to viewers outside of a few major networks of old (with far more restrictive guidelines on what can be done and far less risk taking) television is looking brighter than ever.

No word yet on what the new show will be called.
