FX is making an American Horror Story “companion series” about the O.J. Simpson trial

This is…weird. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX and Ryan Murphy have just announced that they’ll be launching a “companion” series to American Horror Story, titled American Crime Story. Each season will focus on a famous crime story, much like AHS focuses on different horror tropes, and the first season will be called American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpsons.

Murphy said:

This is an exciting project for me, as I’ve been looking for the right property which could serve as an extension of the American Horror Story brand I love so much. The O.J. case was as tragic as it was fascinating– it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome. It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid age.

Well, it’s hard to argue with him on that last point – although you could say that the tabloid age began when the paparazzi caught Liz Taylor having an affair with Richard Burton, so I guess it isn’t hard to argue with him.

I’m still not sure what FX means by “companion series,” because the concepts of AHS and ACS seem pretty disparate. Nonetheless, we’ll keep you updated.
