GameStop Pro Membership Replaces 10% Used Game Discount With Monthly $5 Coupon

GameStop

Gotta keep swinging.

It’s not exactly a secret that GameStop hasn’t been doing too well of late. And that’s why they’ve been changing aspects of their business model. It’s evolve or die time. And so, the latest change is to their PowerUp Rewards Pro membership.

Previously, the membership gave you 10% off on purchases of used games and accessories. That is now no more; instead, once a month, you get a coupon for $5 off of literally anything in the store. If they have it, that coupon applies. That said, while you get it once a month, it also expires at the end of the month. So it’s a use it or lose it kind of proposition.

This is, however, something they’ve been testing for a while. They’ve been putting this plan into practice since last Summer, and the results were promising enough to put into practice; they saw a double-digit increase in the sign-ups for Pro memberships under the new system. Per their press release:

As part of an extensive test on identifying how we could enhance our PowerUp Rewards loyalty program, we recognized there are customers of all types that want to be rewarded in a variety of ways across a mix of gaming and collectible products that we offer. Based on customer feedback, our PowerUp Rewards Pro-level membership has evolved to provide our most loyal customers the opportunity to choose how they want to be rewarded.

As to what the long term effects are, who knows? But they’ll probably still be around in the interim. As long as they make sure the right hand knows what the left hand is doing.
