Gearbox Announces Not-Borderlands 3 a.k.a. Project 1v1

3 is a magic number, in that many developers can’t count to it.

Don’t worry, Borderlands 3 is happening… I think. But currently, they’re working on a game currently known as Project 1v1.

So what is Project 1v1? Well, according to its site, it’s a 1 on 1  FPS “that combines the action of fast-paced 1v1 first-person combat with the metagame strategy of a collectible card game.” Which sounds like a good idea, because Warframe developer Digital Extremes is also toying with the concept for a game called Keystone.

So, now you’re wondering who’s going to win this little arms race. With Gearbox’s Battleborn winning the bronze medal against Overwatch and Paladins, it’s certainly going to be a nailbiter. Still, having played a bit of Battleborn, I think they can do it. They simply need to go lean and mean with the concept, or they might get beat on the open market. Doubly so, if Keystone follows Warframe’s business model.

Regardless, the game’s still top secret. That said, there will be a closed, technical test you can sign up for during the tail end of the summer. The tests will be on North American servers, though, so you may want to take that into account before signing up to test Project 1v1.
