George R.R. Martin posts excerpt from The Winds of Winter in a futile attempt to get everyone to shut up

If I had to guess, I’d say that the question George R.R. Martin gets asked the most is “When the hell is The Winds of Winter coming out?” (Right ahead of “Hodor?”) If you don’t know, The Winds of Winter is the forthcoming sixth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, and since it’s been three long years since A Dance with Dragons came out, people are starting to get a little antsy.

Now Martin has gone ahead and posted an excerpt entitled “Mercy” to his blog because shut up, guys, I’m working on it! God! In a brutal bit of Martinesque cruelty, the increased traffic to the blog is causing it to crash, so you might have to wait a while to read it.

In the meantime, you can amuse yourself with this. That’s what I’ve been doing.
