HP Swings for the Casual Market with their Pavilion Gaming Line

I, uh, wouldn’t mind having one.

HP’s been beefing up their high-end Omen gaming PC line for a while. But it seems that they want to tap into the wider end of the gaming market as well. And that’s the purpose of their new Pavilion Gaming line; for those that don’t need to be on the absolute bleeding edge. The line already has three models lined up; two desktops, one laptop, and as a bonus, a display for the former.

The Pavilion Gaming Laptop is only offered in one size: 15.6 inches. But it does come in multiple configurations, coming for a price as low as $799. All configurations come with an 8th generation Core i5 or i7 processor in either U- or H- series, as well as 8GB of RAM. They also come with some combination of 1TB HDD and a solid state drive. It also comes with choice of a Radeon RX 560X, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, or  GTX 1060 Max-Q. Optionally it can be configured with 16GB of Optane memory. It also comes with backlighting for the keyboard, with a choice of white, green or purple with matching accents. And finally, a choice of display: 1080p 60Hz, 1080p 144Hz, 4K 60Hz.

The Desktops come in two flavors: the 690 and 790. The 690 is made with space constraints in mind, and is therefore less flexible. Because of this, it can only fit half-length graphics cards, in addition to having fewer storage device and memory slots. The 690 starts at $549, and the 790 goes for $749, and both can be specced up.

Finally, the Pavilion Gaming 32 HDR display. Despite the name, it’s supposedly less bright than the sort of displays used in HDR TV’s. But that’s not really a problem for something that’s going to be around 2 feet from your face, which you will stare at for uncountable amounts of time. While it has the same array of colors as other HDR displays it will naturally have less contrast. It clocks in at 2560 x 1440 resolution, 75 Hz refresh rate, and comes with support for AMD’s Freesync, for a price of $449.

You won’t have to wait long for the Pavilion Gaming Line, either. HP is launching the line in parts over May and June this year.
