LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!

LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!

LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is the next in a series of straight to video releases that mesh the world of the DC universe together with that of LEGO. After the huge success of The LEGO Movie, Warner has been quick to take advantage with a string of LEGO based films aimed at the kids market. With LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! we get a followup to LEGO: DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League of which we reviewed earlier this year.

Like that movie before it, LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! comes in a deluxe edition that features an exclusive LEGO minifig only found in this package. While the last film game us the incredibly fun Bizarro Batman, this time around we get the exclusive Trickster minifig. While he is indeed a pretty cool addition to any collection, the character himself only has a few minutes of screen time in the film. Sure, he does set up the need for a nice little New 52 costume change for our DC trinity of heroes, but I would have rather had a Cyborg minifig as he is the main story focus.

The film is a lot of fun with some really great set-pieces early during the first act, and while this does get viewers excited about what’s to come, the film never really manages to recapture that initial thrill until the very final fight. The story in LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is a play off of the fantastic Justice League: Doom animated film of a few years back. Unlike that film though, this one plays it lite with a lot of kid friendly humor all over the place. With the humor comes a number of brief cameos from lesser known DC heroes and villains, which are all used to great effect.

Where things fall apart is in the pacing issues the story faces pretty early on. The focus is on Cyborg, just as it was in the more adult film version, but trying to flesh out a deep story means the movie often loses the fun and silliness that makes these LEGO movies stand out. There are just too many dead points throughout that film where nothing of any real value happens or is being presented. There were a number of times that our group watching sort of looked at each other and then at our watches. The film feela a lot longer than it is, which isn’t all that long to begin with.

LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! gets a lot of points for trying to bring something a little deeper with regards to story to a film directed at small kids, but it just doesn’t quite flow as well as previous installments. If you haven’t seen the previous Bizarro film, then Attack of the Legion of Doom will be sure to please on all fronts, but if you have seen said film, this one will seem like a haphazard followup.

Still, LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is a good deal of fun for small children with its humor and use of the DC LEGO world, but older fans will probably want to pass this one up as it lacks the needed structure to make it a standout film. The combo pack comes with a Blu-ray, DVD, as well as an Ultraviolet code for your portable device. The LEGO minifig is a welcome treat, but the lack solid special features –you only get a sound design feature– is a shame

You can pick up the film on Amazon.
