Malaysian Government Blocks Steam Due to Fight of Gods

Fight of Gods

A good, old fashioned theological ban.

Even if the game wasn’t good, Fight of Gods would have controversy on its side. That’s because the government of Malaysia has blocked Steam access to it’s citizens over the game. Specifically, its portrayal of Buddha, as featured in his fight with Jesus.

He was modeled and he’s a very well-scripted fighter, but he’s not the Messiah.

On the one hand, I get it. Malaysia has a sizeable Buddhist community, and the very loose way most games play with theology is not popular among the religiously conservative. And boy, is Malaysia religiously conservative. On the other hand, plenty of things made in other countries take a a similar view on religion because of how liberal they are. I mean, there’s a commercial that only managed to piss off a small number of Indian-Australians for its portrayal of Ganesha, but I thought it was funny. I’m still not buying what it’s shilling, but it was funny:

Including L. Ron Hubbard, Xenu, and the Space Jesus. Hilarious.

Among the common Gods you’d see in games – Odin, Zeus, Amaterasu, and so on – the roster also has more contemporary deities. And that’s where they’re probably meeting a bit of resistance. Still, if you want to see who would win a theological fight, $8 is a small price to pay to find out. Unless you’re Malaysian.
