Microsoft Discontinues 12 Month Xbox Live Gold Subscriptions

Xbox Live Gold

1- and 3-month subscriptions still available.

Last month, many users noticed that 12-month subscriptions to Xbox Live Gold were suddenly gone. And Microsoft has confirmed that that absence is intentional.

As to what this means, however, is currently unknown. Speculation among the populace seems to be that Xbox Live Gold is being phased out leading into the launch of the Series X line later this year. And, possibly, that the services most associated with Xbox Live Gold will be made free.

The latter may be the truth, according to Venture Beat’s Jeff Grub. In this hypothetical, Ultimate remains, but you no longer need to pay just to play games online.

Granted, none of this is absolute, or at least not yet. There’s not any public statement from the company to indicate that this is the case. But, with a new, and from Xbox, cross-plaform gen on the horizon, it’s certainly possible.
