According to Polygon, Microsoft has just dumped 12 members of their support staff and replaced them with volunteers. The volunteers are unpaid, at least in the traditional sense; instead, they earn points and get entered into giveaways automatically. The former support staff they replaced mostly handled the Xbox Support Twitter.
This is just the latest such step that Microsoft has taken. They’ve previously been using Xbox ambassadors to fulfill support requirements for a while. This is simply the first time they’ve replaced paid employees with them. And their remaining support team oversees the volunteers.
Notably, Polygon’s report states that they had the fired support staff train the volunteers before they left, to increase their output. in a comment to Polygon, Microsoft stated:
We continue to have a number of highly-trained customer support agents, plus community ambassadors, available to help customers with their needs.
