Motorola Applies for Self-Repairing Phone Screen Patent

Motorola Memory Polymer

Will probably work better than duct tape.

Look, drops happen. And if Motorola really has something like this in the works, they might not cost you quite so much.

Motorola recently filed an application for a patent on a self-repairing phone screen. The proposed memory polymer repairs cracks with heat; supposedly, the heat could both be generated by your phone and directed by an app, or applied in other ways, such as via an external device or by hand. This might make those costly cracks mostly a thing of the past.

There are a few downsides, though. First and foremost, it probably won’t feel as nice as a glass screen. Moreover, this sort of tech never fully restores the durability of the screen, so one too many cracks and you’re still going in for repairs. Third, and most salient, this is just a patent application. Companies file for patents on things they’re working on all the time; that doesn’t mean Motorola will be successful in development, much less bring a product to market. Still, such a thing would be really beneficial for the sorts of devices expected to take a hit on the reg.
