According to creator Eric Barone on twitter, Stardew Valley may well have multiplayer by as soon as next month.

Update on Stardew Valley multiplayer: still making good progress on fixing bugs, if all goes well it should be ready in about a month

The publisher, Chucklefish, announced that Multiplayer features went into QA testing in February. At the Time, Barone said:

Work on the new features is done, and we’ve sent all the new text off to be translated into the different languages.

Which is consistent with the recent announcement. To be fair, you’ve been able to play Stardew Valley multiplayer for a while through mods. But having it official adds a bit of security.
