Mushihimesama Review (Switch)

Mushihimesama

CAVE is known for their danmaku shooters. Hell, they held a Guinness world record for how many they made over their existence as a company. So it’s not really a surprise to see one of their best, Mushihimesama, get a port to the Switch.

And naturally, you’re probably wondering how it holds up. The answer is, of course, very well. Live Wire took the utmost care in porting Mushihimesama to modern consoles. And it shows; you’ve got a large number of options for each game mode, a training mode, a host of backgrounds and display settings.

They even have 4 different modes in which to play with all of these settings: Normal, for the vanilla experience, Arranged and Version 1.5 if you feel like spicing things up in different ways, and a novice difficulty with far fewer bullets for games journalists beginners.

Also of note is the fact that the controls are almost completely customizable, something I wish more games actually did. If you don’t like the layout as presented, you can change it to suit your needs.

They took great care to make sure the game looked as good as it ever did in the first place, if not better. CAVE’s spritework for the game was top notch, and that ultimately comes through here.

I’ve basically found that there’s absolutely nothing I can complain about. Anything I possibly could think of they already did. This is one of the most flexible, accessible ports of a game I think I’ve ever seen. I don’t say that lightly. It’s just that good.

So would recommend Mushihimesama? Yes, absolutely. Golden seal of approval. If you’ve never played it before, you might think the $20 price tag a bit steep for a 15+ year old game. But, it’s just that on target. I guarantee you that there are games on the eShop for around the same price that don’t offer you quite the overall value in comparison.
