NASA Offers You Your Very Own Mars Boarding Pass

NASA

Get your ass to Mars!

So the reality is that you’re probably not going to experience Mars, unless of course there’s that gate accident and that one creepy old kid… let’s just not get into it. The pint is, Mars is a long way away, and it ain’t gonna be some tourist destination for a long time. But that’s not going to stop NASA from giving you a little taste of the red planet.

And by little, I mean small. Really small. Because NASA’s running a “Send Your Name” campaign, which will etch your name on a chip in the 2020 Mars Rover. Granted, it’ll be super small; JPL’s using an electron beam to do the etching so that they can fit 1 millon plus names on something the size of a dime. But you also get your very own boarding pass to prove that your name is headed to Mars.

Granted, they’re not dumb enough to just let any name on the voyage. Each one must meet manual review, so no Space Assholes need try to apply; they’re not going to allow anything derogatory on their hardware. Still, the program is open to all worldwide, and requires no more than a valid email address.

NASA isn’t beating around the bush here, either. They’re doing everything they can to drum up interest in their programs. Recently, they uploaded a video laying out their plans to return to the moon within the next half-decade. But this may be the first to actually offer anyone the opportunity to attach their name to one of these projects, even if it is small.
