Surprisingly the easiest way to make that sort of thing work.
If you thought it couldn’t be done, well, you were wrong. Technically, you’ve always been wrong, since the Famicom was capable of limited 80’s-early 90’s internet connection thanks to a modem peripheral. But we’re talking about modern, wireless internet on the NES.
And the makers of Super Tilt Bro. made that happen. Specifically, by building a custom board for the game, complete with an ESP8266 wifi chip, a wifi antenna, and an FPGA chipset that allows WiFi to chooch on a 40-year-old video game console made way before wireless internet was a thing.
As for the game itself, Super Tilt Bro. is a platform fighter in the vein of Super Smash Bros., if the name wasn’t a dead giveaway. The game itself provides the menus necessary to set up WiFi, and offers up a host of ways to play, allowing players to set up matches as they like; for fun, for rank, and even tournaments. The game also features local play, and a single player story mode. Kinda misses the point of the whole WiFi thing, but hey, it’s there for you.
While Broke Studio has finished development and R&D on Super Tilt Bro. is complete, they still need to produce carts, hence a Kickstarter campaign. If you’re looking to get a copy, you’ll be investing €55 (about $61 US) to get your hands on one of these marvelous carts. The collector’s tiers and the like have already been bought out, and they’ve met their goal with most of a month to spare. They plan to ship in April 2024.
That said, crowdfunding always comes with risk. It’s possible for there to be production delays, and even for the project to be canned over something or another. That said, this isn’t Broke Studio’s first rodeo, so there’s some stability in that.
