Netflix Announces 12 Anime Series and a Movie

All looks like pretty good stuff overall, too.

Netflix isn’t going to take Sony’s Funimation acquisition sitting down. They’re getting some exclusives (or, at least, they are outside of Japan) of their own, and no one’s gonna stop them.

First up, Devilman Crybaby, based on the Go Nagai series Devilman. The 10 episode series launches Spring 2018. And that trailer’s lookin’ good:

Next Up is A.I.C.O. -Incarnation-, produced by Studio Bones. It looks to be some crazy cross between Akira, Deadman Wonderland and, for the hell of it, Blade Runner. I say taht because I managed to watch the entire nearly-5-minute trailer and still have no actual clue what it’s about. It also debuts Spring 2018.

The odd man out in the entire lineup (in that, as far as I can see, it’s the only series by a non-Japanese creator) is Cannon Busters, created by The Boondocks co-director LeSean Thomas. Based on his comic of the same name, it’s set to run for 12 episodes. Notably, Thomas partnered with Crunchyroll for Children of Ether.

You also have Kakegurui, a series based on gambling. That’s set to launch sometime in 2018, and, uh, just watch:

You also have Fate/Apocrypha, which is part of the popular, long running Fate series (friendly reminder that people die if they are killed). Comes out November 7th in North America and December 2 in Japan (How?):

The remainder don’t have trailers… yet:

  • Baki, 26 episode series based on the 90’s martial arts manga.
  • B: The Beginning, 12 episodes, Spring 2018, made by Production I.D.
  • Sword Gai: the Animation, action fantasy, Spring 2018
  • Lost Song, 12 episodes, fantasy, 2018
  • Rilakkuma Series, 13 episodes, based on the popular character of the same name.
  • Children of the Whales, about a world covered in oceans of sand, 2018

Netflix also announced an animated Godzilla film. Little is known yet, but it’s set to take place 20,000 years in the future, in a world where Godzilla (and presumably other Kaiju) have run around unchecked. I have no idea how Gamera was okay with that, being a friend to all children and all.
