Netflix Tests Out Ultra Tier in Europe

Higher price for features you currently have.

Netflix has been doing the rates hike shuffle for the past few years. And it’s mostly reasonable; as they spend more on shows and the like, they increase costs. But it never really stays the same price forever, now does it?

And dovetailing from that, Netflix seems to be testing out a new upper tier option in Europe. Some users have reported a new “Ultra” tier of pricing showing up. The tier runs between €16.99-19.99, placing it above the €13.99 premium tier.

According to a Netflix spokesperson’s statement to CNET:

We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time. In this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix.

– Smita Saran, Netflix spokesperson

Cordcutting.com found the changes applied to different European countries as well. Notably, the pricing varied based on the country and browser, as well as the features of the tier. Exempli gratia, Germany, which has the tier at €16.99.

For some, the premium plan’s maximum streaming devices were reduced to two. Others noted that standard gets stripped down to one device. And still others weren’t affected at all. So, Netflix is clearly testing the waters to see how to move forward. Though some might not be too thrilled with losing things they were already paying for. That said, since the new plan also seems to include HDR support and 4K UHD, many users might migrate up a tier anyway.
