A group of award-winning web developers, designers, and gaming industry veterans have launched a standalone streaming application that capitalizes on the massively popular Twitch streaming platform, which was acquired by Amazon in August of 2014 for $970 million.
“With the explosive growth and increasing mainstream awareness of competitive gaming, building the Overcharge platform has not only been a passion project, but a business venture that we expect to pay dividends over the next 5 years,” said founder Stew Houston, who is an ex-professional Counter-Strike player and former CTO of nutrition coaching service Precision Nutrition. “eSports tournaments are now selling out major stadiums, attracting over 10,000 attendees for major events, and online viewership is quickly rivaling that of conventional sports. The League of Legends Championship Series, for example, peaked at over 14 million concurrent viewers on Twitch alone.”
The Overcharge platform is the next logical step in the growth of the Twitch platform, which is currently contentiously divided between those who play games casually and those who consider themselves ‘digital athletes.’ The overcharge.tv application, which currently runs in modern web browsers but will soon be available as a native desktop application for both Windows 10 and OS X, acts as a centralized hub for both watching live events and comprehensive community engagement. Built on top of Google’s web infrastructure, the application has been engineered to match the scale and sheer traffic garnered by current and future eSports viewership.
