Ninjak #23

I think we all know that feeling you get when a comic series surprises you right after you’re thinking “I’m not really sure what should happen next.” Ninjak #23 surprises us with the beginning of a new plot with a truly promising main idea.

I had some doubts about the direction this comic book would have right after reading the last issue. I didn’t really know which could be the right option for forward, as I find it pretty hard to see a starting point for the next chapter the way things ended. Valiant showed me that the best option is just to bet the farm on a new story that’s directly tied to the past.

It could a little bit controversial to say this, but if you liked the Suicide Squad movie, even just a little bit,  you might have a similar feeling towards Ninjak #23. The main scene in the book looks quite like one particular scene pulled from the movie, which is among my favorite ones, by the way. I won’t spoil it, but if you saw the film you’ll spot the scene in this issue.

thought it was also a good option to bet on a simple story to begin with, right after the mess of time lines that we had in the past few issues. Not not that I disliked all the jumping about, but to be honest, it was a little hard to read at times. It literally felt like the whole series was taking one big deep breath in order to regain new energy in the bloodstream to keep going on.

One of the best things I find after reading Ninjak #23 a few times are the personalities on each character being very striking and vivid. They really feel like real people, real human beings, with real issues and disturbed minds in some cases. There are real shdes of light and dark going on that really help influence their personalities.

In terms of art, you can find the same style we are used to see in many other comics from Valiant. It’s very raw, direct, detailed and colorful, but with a real sense of cinematography and scale that Valaint does like no other.

Also, you’ll be happy to know that since there are so many dialogue and narration bits, the team still managed to make it all look much simpler, making Ninjak #23 a light and fast read. I loved the way it looked and how the speech matched the images so naturally. 10 points to Gryf… er, Valiant.

However, I need to tell you that there are a couple of scenes where some details in the art make little sense. Some facial expressions are awkward, there are a few framing issues, and a fgew over shadowed panel. These are all minor details I noticed here and there that took me out of the world for a second. They don’t bother me enough as to spoil the whole comic, but keep it in mind so you can be prepared.

In the end, we know nothing is perfect, but you can say that Ninjak #23 is pretty is about as good as it gets on a quality level in both art and story. The script was simpler this time, which was the right choice, and despite the minor issues on the art, I’m sure you’ll have a blast reading this one.
