Nintendo Direct 9/04/19 In Review

Nintendo

Lot of stuff heading to Switch.

The latest Nintendo Direct had a fair bit of stuff to go over. So, without further adieu:

Overwatch on Switch

Possibly the worst kept gaming secret recent of late, but hey, here it finally is. Overwatch is headed to Switch. Moreover, there’s also some motion control elements being added, for aiming. it hits the system on October 15th this year.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 – New Features

They showed off a bit of Luigi’s Mansion 3 in the Direct. Notably, they showed off the differences between floors of the hotel; one might be done up like a medieval castle, while another will be set up like an Egyptian pyramid, or a jungle.

They also showed off a party mode for the game called Scream Park. It sets two teams of up to four players (one made of Luigis, the other made of Gooigis) to see who can accomplish the most of a given task per round (one might involve sucking up collectibles, the other might be a race to destroy the most targets). Luigi’s Mansion 3 will see release on October 31st.

Super Kirby Clash

Super Kirby Clash is a free-to-start game. And for the most part, it seems to be in the vein of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. It offers both local and online multiplayer, and a number of missions to complete. It was made available immediately after the Direct ended, so you can play it right now.

Trials of Mana Remake

They also showed off a bit of the 3D remake of Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3). Notably, the remake gives characters a full range of movement in a 3D space; they can jump and move around as you’d expect in a modern game. Trials of Mana hits the Switch April 24th, 2020.

Return of the Obra Dinn

Lucas Pope’s (Papers, Please) second game is coming to the Switch. Return of the Obra Dinn is a puzzle game, tasking the player to figure out what happened aboard the titular ship. The game hits the eShop this Fall.

Little Town Hero

Little Town Hero is the new title of the GameFreak game previously called Town. Paying close attention to strategy is important in this RPG. The hero, Axe, has ideas in battle, and utilizing them properly is the key to success. Coincidentally, it’s one of two bits of news concerning Undertale-creator Toby Fox; he composed the music for the game. Little Town Hero hits the shelves on October 16th.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate – Fighter Packs 3 & 4

Banjo & Kazooie release is confirmed! You can download Challenger Pack 3 right now; you’ll get Banjo & Kazooie, Spiral Mountain, and 10 new music tracks to go with them. But that’s not all the Smash news they had. While the surprise was spoiled a few days back that we’d be getting an SNK representative, no one knew who it would be. But now we do; Fatal Fury‘s Terry Bogard joins the roster. Hell, the announcement is one hell of a thing too, done in the style of Neo Geo intros from back in the day.

And that’s still not all of the Smash news! Because they’re not actually stopping at 5 extra fighters. They’re going one step further, with new fighters in development right now. One really has to wonder what else they plan on adding. There’s even more; but that was left until after the Direct, where Masahiro Sakurai not only showed off Banjo & Kazooie, but a little more.

Home Run Contest is back! And you can play it with a second player to really jack up the distance! But more than that, they also announced Mii Fighter move customization; this will make it easier than ever to download fresh Mii fighters as you see them online. Granted, they have to be uploaded after the update for the changes to apply, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. And speaking of Mii Fighters, a whole bunch of costumes are touching down..

Yeah, you saw that right; don’t let your memes be dreams.

Notably, the Sans costume is the only one to come with it’s own music. And the remix of Megalovania was arranged for the game by Toby Fox himself. And Sakurai even praised his skills at the game. You can’t do better than that, eh?

Aside from Sans, the pack also contains Mii costumes representing a number of series. You’ve got Goemon from the Mystical Ninja series, Prto Man from Mega Man, Zero from Mega Man X, and Team Rocket from Pokémon. The pack is available now.

The Legend of Zelda : Link’s Awakening

The remake for the Switch is looking pretty dang good. The chamber dungeons can be saved to a compatible Amiibo (Zelda series figures specifically) and shared with friends. The Legend of Zelda : Link’s Awakening touches down on September 20th.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition

The version of the game not plagued by horrible midis is almost nigh. It’ll even come with free DLC! Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition hits the Switch on September 27th.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE Encore

Remember that weird Shin Megami Tensei/Fire Emblem crossover game that was unfortunately stuck on the Wii U? Well, now you’ll be able to play it on the Switch. With additions! The enhanced port hits the Switch January 17th, 2020.

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise

Once again, you’ll be able to get your Twin Peaks game fix thanks to Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise. Moreover, the original game is also being ported to the Switch. So make yourself a Sinner’s Sandwich and whistle along to totally-notSuperMarioWorld’sAthletic-Theme. Deadly Premontion 2 is set to launch in 2020; the original game just launched on the Nintendo eShop as Deadly Premonition: Origins.

Divinity: Original Sin 2: Definitive Edition

Divinity: Original Sin 2: Definitive Edition is hitting the Switch. Not only can you take your game on the go, you can actually share your saves between the Switch and Steam versions. It’s already out on the eShop.

DOOM 64

Rip and tear like the good old days. Bethesda and Id went to the effort to make sure an absolute classic in DOOM 64 would be on the Switch. It’s a super big deal, since it hasn’t seen a rerelease on a more modern platform since it came out in 1997. DOOM 64 hits the Switch November 22nd this year.

Rogue Company

Hi-Rez’s newest game is coming to the Switch. The game is a competitive third-person shooter. Every Rogue Company agent has a fully customizable loadout, too. And you’ll have more than enough modes and missions to test every one of them out. Rogue Company releases in 2020.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Updates

I mean, you’ve got everything you could want. You’ve even got a teapot Pokémon in Polteageist! Doesn’t get more British than tea. And curry. And camping in Lyme Regis. You’ll also get a fair amount of character customization vis a vis clothing this time round.

Yep, the internet’s going to do absolutely nothing with this one, I’m sure.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield hits the shelves November 15th.

The demo is out now, and the game proper releases next week, September 13th.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast gets Switch Port

The cult of Kyle Katarn should grow from this, and rightfully so. Aspyr is handling the port of this classic. And my God, short of Jedi Academy, this was the best it ever got. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast will be available on the Switch September 24th, and contain the full single-player campaign.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Nintendo gave us a taste of island life with a promotional video for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For one thing, nothing on the island is worthless, thanks to crafting. Even weeds can be turned into something useful, if you don’t want to turn them in for their little weed bounty. Aside from that, the vaulting pole is the largest addition to the repertoire shown thus far, allowing you to skip all that bridge traffic. Fruit also actually does something aside from make you money this time, too; eating it allows you to do things, like dig up and replant fully grown trees. Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches March 20th, 2020.

Xenoblade Chronicles – Definitive Edition

The last thing shown is a port of the Wii original, Xenoblade Chronicles. And since this is billed as the definitive edition, it’s going to have everything… right? Either way, it’s good for me; I could never afford the original thanks to that goddamn exclusivity deal with GameStop, and I still don’t own a New Nintendo 3DS. So for those like me, this’ll probably be the best chance to pick up the game. Xenoblade Chronicles – Definitive Edition has a 2020 release date.
