Nintendo Switch Online Service will be Netflix-like For Their Old Games

In a surprise move, Nintendo has revised their classic game service for the Nintendo Switch. Initially, they had announced that there would be a free game each month for subscribers, allowing them to play the game for that month before it rotated out. That system is no more; now, all subscribers will have access to, supposedly, the entirety of the Switch’s NES  Virtual Console titles at any given time.

The sudden change of tack has led to a swift PR victory for the company. Considering that subscription to their online service will be $20 for a year subscription, you’ll be able to get your game on no matter your immediate financials. Currently, this service is restricted to NES titles (with Dr. Mario, Balloon Fight, and Super Mario Bros. 3 currently announced as the first 3 games on the service), but there is talk that eventually SNES games could make their way to the service.

This is a huge deal for the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo can be fair in their business decisions, they can often be arcane. One day a decision might be straightforward, the next might as well have been decided by a toss of the knucklebones and a ritual fireside dance. That all aside, it’s nice to know you won’t have to buy some of Nintendo’s older titles for the fourth or fifth time. The Nintendo Switch seems to be off to a much better start than its predecessor.
