NIS America Apologizes for Ys VIII Translation, Hints PC Release Soon

Patch will apply to the PS4 and Vita versions.

Recently, NIS America felt the need to apologize for the translation of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. There was also the fact that the PC version of the game had been delayed. Well, it seems the translation was the sticking point for that. In an open letter posted on NIS America’s site:

It has come to my attention that the quality of the Ys VIII localization has not reached an acceptable level by our own standards, but most importantly by yours. As president of NIS America, Inc. I want to apologize to you personally for this grave error. This situation should not have happened – especially to a game as wonderful as Ys VIII and by a company that strives to deliver the very best customer experience in each title. We have begun internally to investigate the causes of this situation as well as to implement steps to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again. As for Ys VIII itself, we will have a new translator and editor go over the entire localization to fix grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, and also to take a fresh look at the dialog and characterizations. For the script, where necessary, we will re-translate and re-edit the game including updating voicework to reflect these changes.

– NIS America President and CEO, Takuro Yamashita

It’s likely that part of the translation problem is due to the change in translation company. Many of the previous Ys games in the past decade were translated by XSeed Games, an affiliate of Marvelous. Ys VIII, on the other hand, was the first to see translation by NIS America.

As of right now, the plan is for the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana to happen in November. That will be with the new translation. And considering NIS America is going full bore on the retranslation, including rerecording lines wherever appropriate, it’ll probably be pretty sweet.
