Our time with Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin at E3

Like if Harvets Moon had fighting, or something.

We got to see more of Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin at the Marvelous booth this year. And it’s shaping up to be quite a cool little game.

Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin is one part farming game, and one part side-scrolling action RPG. And since it wasn’t exactly a focus of the split demo (the demo we went through was all action stage) one of the kind booth attendants clued us in. Since Sakuna is a goddess of rice, the more you grow, the stronger she gets.

As far as the action bits, it reminds me a little of Muramasa the Demon Blade. You can do combos, but you can’t exactly button mash, since it’s all very directional. Doing so would leave you open to attacks otherwise.

She also has a scarf that can be used a number of ways. Since she can’t double jump, it’s a powerful movement tool, allowing her to pull herself to any surface it hits. It also allows her to sling herself past enemies so that she can avoid their attacks.

Finally, she has a few directional specials at her disposal. They deal more damage, but are limited by a stamina bar. The bar slowly recovers afterwards, though she can’t use another one until it’s full.

So overall, I’m going to keep an eye on this one. And we won’t have to wait long, either. Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin releases sometime this year in the west.
