Playdate: The Indie Handheld System With A Crank On The Side

Playdate

what is this i don’t even

Firewatch publisher Panic, Inc. has introduced a new handheld system to the market. Dubbed the Playdate, it’s yellow. And also, it has a fucking crank on the side.

Each Playdate comes with the following:

  • 2.7 inch, 400×240 black and white screen
  • D-pad and two face buttons
  • That crank control, co-developed by Teenage Engineering
  • 12 new games designed around the system

Panic is keeping most of those 12 games under wraps. But they did share some of the developers that are creating these games. They include the likes of Keita Takahashi (Katamari Damacy), Bennett Foddy (QWOP, Getting Over It), Shaun Inman (The Last Rocket), and Zach Gage (SpellTower). They also shared the title screens for four of them, below.

The Playdate is set to retail for $149 US, with a planned launch in early 2020. For that price, you get all 12 season 1 games (yes, it runs on a season system, where you’ll be able to buy a season’s worth of games, with a season running for about 3 months). You can also sign up for pre-order by hitting up their mailing list at Play.Date.
