Snapchat Releasing $130 Camera-Equipped Glasses This Year

Snapchat is looking to make it even easier to share content with friends through the service with a new product –Snapchat glasses. Yes, you read that correctly, Snapchat glasses. Company head Evan Spiegal showed off the new specs to a group today behind closed doors and we have the leaked commercial for the glasses below. Oh, and another huge announcement was a re-branding of the company now known as Snap Inc.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the new glasses are the first physical product under the new banner and will feature the ability to record 10-second videos with the tap of a button. Talk about the perfect pair of spy glasses! Every time you tap a new recording will start and then be automatically shared to your Snapchat account without needing to pull out your phone.

What makes this camera special is that it won’t be recording in the traditional rectangular format that a phone uses. Instead, the embedded camera will mimic the human eye and show a circular image. Spiegal noted that the standard square camera format is, “an unnecessary vestige of printing photos on sheets of paper.” This new style will better mimic what we actually see and will hopefully lead to unique creations.

The new Snapchat glasses will hit the market this year, but don’t expect it to be easy to snag a pair as they will be filtered out on a limited basis so the company can gauge interest. The price has been announced at $130, so the glasses are pretty affordable for those in need of a new pair.  Spiegal said that the company doesn’t expect to make huge profits off the product and when asked why they decided to release them he replied, “Because it’s fun.”

Personally, I hope these things get hacked really quick so I can stream unlimited length content to Facebook or another streaming platform.

UPDATE: The first official commercial is now available as well as website (www.spectacles.com) for the glasses, now branded as ‘Spectacles’. They look pretty slick and we hope we can snag a pair to test out before they drop later this year.
