Sony And Microsoft Partner Up To improve Cloud Gaming And Streaming Platforms

Cloud Gaming

That’s an unexpected 180.

Recently, Sony and Microsoft got along on something. specifically, they both signed a memorandum of understanding to explore “joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services.” The point, of course, being to improve streaming and content creator platforms.

Of course, the agreement is also meant to explore collaboration in the fields of AI and semiconductors. The goal there being to bring Sony’s semiconductors and Microsoft’s cloud technology together.

For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content. Additionally, I hope that in the areas of semiconductors and AI, leveraging each company’s cutting-edge technology in a mutually complementary way will lead to the creation of new value for society.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida

Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation. Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

It would, however, be best not to jump the gun on what this partnership means. I wouldn’t go expecting a similar deal to the one Microsoft has going with Nintendo, for example. But it is a surprising change of tune, considering the potshots both companies have taken at each other in the past.
