Star Wars: Dark Forces Is Getting A Remaster

Star Wars: Dark Forces

There’s three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Kyle Katarn way.

You guessed it, Nightdive Studios is on the case again. This time, they’re remastering an important bit of Star Wars game history. Specifically, Star Wars: Dark Forces; and yes, it’ll be coming to all major platforms.

For the uninitiated, Dark Forces was, despite an almost complete lack of Jedi or Lightsabers, the origin point of the Jedi Knight series of games. It was also the first Star Wars FPS, for what it’s worth, as well as the introduction to

Katarn

Ahh, when the sewer count was only in double digits…

Fuck the Disney shit, Kyle Katarn stole the Death Star plans. It is also universal canon that Kyle Katarn punched a Kell dragon to death with his bare hands. You’ll never be as badass as Kyle Katarn, but you’ll always wish you were.

You need to know: Kyle Katarn is too cool for Disney canon.

But I digress. Nightdive is giving this classic the full works. Using their Kex engine, Dark Forces will get some much needed features: modern controls, 4k resolution, widescreen support, 60fps, not having to run it through DOSBox. Says Nightdive’s Larry Kuperman:

What we really try to do is bring back the way you felt when you played the original,” Kuperman said. “That’s our mission.” He added, “Our mantra is always about preservation. And you don’t preserve things by changing them.

Star Wars: Dark Forces will also be “popularly priced” according to Kuperman. Which should indicate a roughly $20 to $30 price tag. That said, there is also a 4K fan remaster in the works, so it’ll be interesting to see how the two compare.
