Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #2 Review

Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #2 picks up right where things left off from last month. We have Maul on the run after the destruction of his forces and looking to regroup his other compatriots before Count Dooku, General Grevious, and Sidious close in around him.

Jeremy Barlow is once again in command and gives us a small respite from the action that took place last month. Issue two manages to be a filler issue that gives us a larger and more expanded story on Maul, as well as introducing us to Mother Talzin, the all-powerful witch guiding Maul. We know that she is the true reason why Sidious is hunting Maul to the ends of the universe and her presence is felt in throughout this issue.

Juan Frigeri’s pencil work is once again on point and gives Mother Talzin and imposing figure, towering over Maul during their brief communications. While she has the look that you would associate with a witch (even a space witch in the Star Wars universe) see does end up coming off a tad bit silly. This is due to the fact that her face is painted in a similar style as Maul’s face is, the only difference being she’s largely white with black highlights. She looks less scary and more an Insane Clown Posse fan.

Seeing Count Dooku in action against Maul’s brethren is a real treat, even if it doesn’t last all that long. Barlow and company manage to make him an imposing figure, one whose skill with a lightsaber is to be feared. Once again, the book doesn’t shy away from the violence in its action scenes. Limbs are hacked off, heads roll, and the artists really show the brutality of what combat of this nature would truly look like. It’s something that I don’t just would work in today’s Disney owned movie universe.

After Maul’s defeat last issue it’s nice to see him finally have some revenge and take the fight to his enemies. We know Sidious is always thinking three moves ahead, but with Mother Talzin in the picture, we finally get the feeling that there is another that can challenge him.

Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #2 is a good continuation of the series and is helped with showcasing stinger art this time around. A good plot that leaves you engaged and curious as to what happens next, not only with Maul, but his enemies as well help to make this an enjoyable read. This is a definite pickup for Star Wars fans as well as fans of Darth Maul. He is finally looking like an impressive force and makes his movie version pale in comparison.
