Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 Review

Matt Kindt brings us another excellent tale in his ongoing Star Wars Rebel Heist series with Star Wars Rebel Heist #3. The writing in this limited series has been its strong suit since issue one and it’s no exception in this third issue. Each book has featured a separate protagonist that we know from the Star Wars Universe all taking part in a much larger, yet interconnected story. In this third issue we see the legendary Wookie warrior, Chewbacca pick up transporting someone vital to the Rebellion that Princess Leia risked her life to get off world during issue two, getting herself captured in the process.

That’s actually one of the things I really am enjoying about this series so far. Sure, we’ve heard all these grand secondhand accounts over the years in other stories, but actually seeing the lengths these characters will go for the greater good is really nice to see. There are no lucky breaks, no magic plot devices that save them just in the nick of time to be had here. They do their duty to the Rebellion, and each other, and pay the price for it by being captured and tortured. It’s not often I read a Star Wars book where I wonder what’s going to happen next to core characters of the series, so Rebel Heist is to be commended for that.

Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 1

What I love most about this third issue, besides the great writing and solid art, is the depth it gives to a character we all know and love, yet know little about. Chewbacca of course is the impossible to understand (yet everyone in the universe  seems to speak Wookie) companion to Han Solo, the two bonded together through a life debt. Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 serves to expand on just who Chewbacca really is and what drives him, all from the eyes of a former Storm Trooper who is under his protection.

In the space of a single issue we see our Trooper friend go from dismissing the Wookie as a mindless beast from a people that caused the deaths of many of his fellow soldiers, to seeing him as something more, something more than even just a skilled warrior, even more than a hero. He grows to see the similarities between himself and Chewbacca, understanding that they are in fact motivated by the same thing. Something beyond duty to the greater good, but instead by loyalty, by friendship. Things that the Empire could never understand, could never squash, thus making the Rebellion something more powerful than could ever be imagined.

Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 2

If you have been following with the series so far, then Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 is a must have back that adds to an already excellent series. As these books are individual stories you can still find a lot of enjoyment from jumping in even now (The book offers a nice brief recap of events to bring you up to speed).

Star Wars Rebel Heist #3 offers a lot of action, but the focus here is on the writing and the reader diving deeper into the nitty-gritty world that our heroes inhabit. I look forward to seeing what’s in store next for our company of heroes now scattered across the galaxy.
