Star Wars Rebels “The Honorable Ones”

StarWarsRebels-TheHonorableOnes-0

Star Wars Rebels follows in its predecessor’s footsteps in a way when it comes to forcing certain characters to interact. Take two characters that may or may not be on the best of terms, stick them up a tree, and throw some rocks at them.

The Ghost crew and Rex are scouting out an Imperial construction base over Geonosis. Hera notes that the scanners pick up actually no life on the surface of the planet, which leaves Rex incredulous. After all, there were millions of them during the Clone Wars. They couldn’t kill them faster than they could breed. Anyway, they set down in the base and, say it with me…

It’s a trap!

Kallus is there, and Zeb immediately engages him in close quarters combat. The rest of the crew start to withdraw, but Zeb isn’t going to miss an opportunity to avenge his fallen bretheren, and tells them he’ll be right behind them. His fight runs long, and while he seemingly knocks Kallus out, he realizes that finishing him off would waste precious time since he missed the Ghost. He goes for an escape pod instead, but Kallus wasn’t as unconscious as Zeb thought, and their fight carries on into the now launched pod, messing with the controls and sending them to one of Geonosis’ moons rather than Geonosis itself.

“Stop breathin’ down my neck1 I’m trying to drive!”

After fighting off the Imperials, the crew starts searching for Zeb on Geonosis. The problem is that they can only spend so much time looking for Zeb before the Imperials come back.Which is really all the involvement they have with the rest of the episode; it’s a Zeb and Kallus show.

Kallus broke his leg in the crash, and they find themselves in a cave just under the surface of the moon. Zeb acknowledges how easy it would be for him to kill Kallus as he is now, but also decides he won’t because it wouldn’t be as fun or satisfying. They have a beacon that only goes out on an Imperial frequency which Zeb fiddles with until it will go out across all signals. The problem is that it’s super cold, and the pod’s survival heater wasn’t meant for such extreme conditions; luckily they find some glowing rock that provides heat for some reason. Oh, and the signal won’t make it out since they’re under the surface, so they need to climb out of their hole.

Oh, and also there’s these things.

These things look like something from an episode of Clone Wars, but I don’t know what they’re called, so I can’t find their (no doubt fully fleshed out) wiki entry. But they force Kallus and Zeb to watch each others backs. After helping him scare off the axebeak thing, Zeb splints Kallus’ leg with his bo-rifle. Kallus finally explains how it came into his possession; during the incident on Lasan, he met and fought a Lasat warrior. As the warrior was dying, he gifted his bo-rifle to Kallus, in accordance with their warrior code. Their interaction here is super interesting, but it gets interrupted by axebeak coming back with friends, forcing them to make the dangerous climb to the surface.

They make it, and The Ghost is the first responder. Zeb offers to treat him fairly, since they’d at least gained an understanding, but Kallus decides to chance it on the Empire getting the signal. As the end of the episode lets us know, he makes it. The entire sequence is interesting; it’s almost entirely devoid of dialogue, and depicts Kallus returning to a tiny, mostly empty room and tossing the rock on the shelf above the cot. He sits down, clearly questioning both his loyalty and his actions.

The seed of doubt has been planted.

Star Wars Rebels promised us a lot of things next week. Yoda, a fight with the Inquisitors, a Jedi temple. I’m just wondering where Darth Maul is going to fit in. (Yes, we know he’s alive.)

Final Thoughts:

  • They let us know that Kallus hasn’t really questioned things before. I wonder if he’ll pull a Finn.
  • Rex just seems to pop onto the Ghost at random for an episode before disappearing again.
  • Chopper is a bloodthirsty little guy, as shown once again by his disregard not just for living things but also for his own kind.
