Steven Universe “Back to the Barn”

Things pretty much pick up where they left off on Steven Universe. Peridot tells them how the Cluster is going to chestburst its way out of the Earth’s core and put on a musical number in the shattered remains, using Steven as a visual aid. She then goes on a crazy spree around the beach house breaking shit for the sake of getting components to build Gurren Lagann a drill to get them to the Earth’s core and stop it. Steven suggests instead that they use the shit in the barn to build it.

A problem arises when Peridot doesn’t want to work with Pearl. One of the most interesting things in this one is why. Peridot reveals that the homeworld has a pretty rigid class structure based entirely on what type of gemstone a gem is. Pearls are pretty much on the bottom rung, practically a slave class (as in, Peridot considers herself the owner of Pearl for the duration of the project and finds such an idea amusing as it’s above her status), and that Pearls are made to order. They’re like super special companion cubes or something. Needless to say, Pearl is not pleased with Peridot’s attitude.

On the plus side, I'm sure there's a few goth Pearls out there, which ought to make Pan Pizza happy. Also, imagine playing a game of darts entirely with Pearls!

Just as things are about to become violent, Steven suggests they build robots as a competition. Giant robots. Best robot wins, and you realize you like this kid’s style, because who doesn’t love giant robots? they run them through a bunch of tests to see who really has the superior technological know how.

They’re both pretty evenly matched. Once they run out of tests in a dead tie, Pearl is ready to accept it and call it quits, but Peridot isn’t. She’s got her pride as an engineer, and she essentially throws the first punch by ripping the arm of Pearl’s robot off.

Gonna go with Amethyst on this one. Not having your giant robots fight is like having 1000 copies of the latest Nickelback album and not tossing them in a pile and lighting them on fire. You're kinda obligated.

Let's see you grit those TEETH!

Needless to say, it doesn’t really go too well for Pearl’s slightly more elegant and graceful machine.

Puny robot.
Puny robot.

Peridot crows over her victory, demanding attention. So she’s obviously dismayed to find that no one is impressed with her robot, but instead worried about (and impressed by) Pearl. This is because, as the episode demonstrates, Pearl stands out from others of her kind; she taught herself to fight and engineer things, even though she wasn’t meant for either. This leads to Peridot apologizing and making up with Pearl in the way only an egotist can, the episode ending on the beginnings of their jolly cooperation.

Final Thoughts:

  • God, Pearl’s head looks huge in comparison to Peridot’s. Just one of those things you notice when they’re side by side.
  • Peridot can’t open an access panel, but she can lift a CRT television above her head.
  • “Welcome to Earth!”
