Telltale is Allegedly Retiring the Telltale Engine

Telltale

A decade and a half is a pretty good run.

According to Variety, Telltale may be moving on from their Telltale Tool engine. Reportedly, the engine’s last hurrah will be The Walking Dead: The Final Season, which releases this August 14th. After that, the studio will be switching to Unity for all future games, starting with their Stranger Things project. A Telltale job listing also happens to confirm the change.

ot only that, but a few of their projects have been moved back. The Wolf Among Us 2 has been nudged to 2019, and Game of Thrones: Season 2 has been put on hold indefinitely.

The change has been a long time in the making, though. The aging game engine had actually become a hindrance around the time they were making Game of Thrones: Season 1. Notably, the original plan was for the game to be streamed via HBO Now. Unfortunately, the engine simply made that task impossible.

The change also comes after the company took a few hits. First and foremost, the layoff of a quarter of their staff. As well as being sued by the former CEO of the company.
