Walmart Is Now Selling Gateway PCs; No, You Did Not Travel Back In Time

Gateway

Remember when Gateway had their own stores? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Ahh, Gateway. That name probably brings back some fond memories for some, installing games in secret on Dad’s PC, browsing old-school message boards, being Y2K compliant and proving it with a sticker on the case. Well, they’ve kinda been gone for a while; that is, Gateway as a company. I was pretty surprised to find that they lasted as an individual company until 2007. But they were bought by Acer, and while Gateway never truly went away, it seems they’re dusting off the brand for a range of consumer model PCs that will be sold through Walmart.

And they’re leaning into the full nostalgia, here. Each new PC is sold in a box festooned with Gateway’s trademark Holstein cow pattern.

The Gateway PC brand and its renowned cow-spotted boxes have been well-loved in the United States since 1985. Acer is thrilled that Walmart is becoming the exclusive provider of Gateway-branded notebooks and tablets. We are pleased that customers in the United States and Puerto Rico will have the opportunity to enjoy the beloved Gateway brand again through one of the world’s top retailers.

The new Gateway line ranges in price from $200-$1200, and includes laptops, 2-in-1’s, and even a few tablets. And from most reviews, the line offers good value for the money. Granted, they’re a little light on the RAM and storage – none of them have more than 8GB RAM or 256GB of SSD space (the 2-in-1’s are at 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, notably). That said, the prices of solid state drives in particular have been decreasing, and RAM should hopefully drop in price again, eventually.
