World Of Goo Gets Polished Up To Be Free On Epic Store

World of Goo

Build the tower of goo all over again.

World of Goo, for those that haven’t played it, was, for its time, a fairly refreshing puzzle/builder. But it came out in 2008; an awkward transition period between standard definition and HD. Not to mention there were a few rough spots to the game.

Well, not only is World of Goo going to get the tender loving care it needs to get back up to snuff, there’s an added bonus. On May 2nd, it will also be free on the Epic Store. And, yeah, it’s going to run properly on modern PCs.

The last time we built the PC version of World of Goo was ten years ago, way back in 2009. The game ran at a 4:3 aspect ratio and at a resolution of 800×600. Most computers now can’t even enter that old 800×600 mode without the screen flashing or glitching. The game would also crash your computer if you had more than one monitor hooked up.

So over the last few months, we’ve rebuilt the game for Win / Mac / Linux and it should now work nicely again on everyone’s modern computers. It’ll run by default at a modern widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, and at whatever size you want. We also made a lot of improvements over the years for other platforms, like Nintendo Switch, so we brought over those improvements as well.

They’re doubling the resolution, and upscaling the graphics using “high quality upscaling tools to start,” then finishing the work by hand, according to Gabler. That said, the classic graphics will be available to toggle on and off, if you prefer them.

That said, the leaderboards have long been removed from the game. Mostly because they never really worked that well to begin with, as Gabler explains:

Our poor server constantly got stressed out and shut itself down. In all recent versions of the game, including the version launching on the Epic store, we’ve redesigned bits of the game to accommodate this change.

That said, if you really need a leaderboard, he points out that GooFans.com has a nicer one than the game itself ever had.

If you’re slightly miffed that this new version of World of Goo is an Epic exclusive, don’t be. It will actually be heading to all of the other platforms, eventually. But it will be coming to Epic first.
