All that glitters is not WoW gold.

A 38-year-old Romanian man is about to find out what U.S. prisons are like. Calin Mateias launched a series of DDoS attacks on the World of Warcraft servers back in 2010. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, he committed the attacks over an unspecified argument with another player.

Between February and September 2010, typically in connection with in-game disputes with other players, Mateias launched DDoS attacks on World of Warcraft servers in Europe. […] Mateias’ DDoS attacks caused World of Warcraft servers to crash and prevented some paying customers from accessing the game.

He was indicted in 2011 after an investigation by the FBI, but was only extradited to the U.S. to face trial in 2017. He’s been in custody since November 20th last year. He agreed to plead guilty to one count of intentional damage to a protected computer in exchange for the U.S. Government dropping the charges in a previous attempted hack and robbery of Ingram Micro in 2004.

In addition to his one-year prison sentence, Mateias was also ordered to pay $30,000 to Blizzard in restitution for the cost of defending against his attacks. According to NBC Los Angeles, he has already paid that sum.
