Xbox One S All-Digital Edition May Soon Be A Thing

Xbox One S All-Digital Edition

Sorta fits in with their streaming plans, honestly.

Rumors have cropped up of a discless Xbox One for a while now. And it seems more and more like those rumors are soon to become reality. According to Windows Central, the new model will supposedly be called the “Xbox One S All Digital Edition”. Scuttlebutt is that it’s planned to ship sometime in May, with pre-orders opening around mid-April. And, supposedly, ditching the Blu-ray drive will knock $100 off the price of the system.

Other than that, the rumors speak of a Fortnite special edition console printed with some custom art. That said, there’s no info on whether that’s for the Xbox One S or the X.

As for the idea behind a discless Xbox system, it’s not terribly hard logic to follow. This could be a test drive for having a similar feature for their next-gen lineup (codenamed Scarlett). Not to mention their oft mentioned plans for their game streaming service.

Internet infrastructure is, however, still the limiting factor on both a streaming-only and digital-only system. There are plenty of places that still have poor or metered internet, in the U.S. alone. We’ll just have to see how things all pan out.
